These are photos from Thanksgiving. I suppose life caught up with me and I never posted my favorites. But these beautiful images are from when we passed my camera around between me and my little cousins. I showed them how to hold the camera, to look through the view finder, and to not be afraid to capture people. Sure, many came out blurry and out of focus, but when I saw these, the familiar and abstract scenes seemed too perfect to be accidental. There are little budding artists in our family, which makes me proud.
And then they would capture portraits, like the last one of me, and they'd get the focus just right. They'd capture the moment just right of silly faces, big laughs, or content expressions.
Valentine's Day is coming up. It's not really a "holiday" to me, so very unlike Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday full of family, food, drinks, and a beautiful table with beautiful people. Valentine's Day is a day where I like to avoid restaurants, maybe check out a hole-in-the-wall bar, and mostly, it's an excuse for S to draw me an organ. Not sure when it started, but at some point S drew a Valentine's Day card for me of an anatomically correct heart, writing something correlated inside. There's also been a left lung, and a skeletal hand that said, "I'm glad we exchanged digits." Be still my unromantic heart... Not sure what organ S will give up this year, and whatever your tradition is, I hope it makes you smile like receiving an organ from your lover.
Great post. I often let my littlest one loose with my camera and am always fascinated to see the images she decides are important enough to capture and to see the final images she captures. My son, 8, is quite the little photographer, camera in hand more than me nowadays....he has aspirations to be a film director and is always taking short video shots....find your 'organ' tradition wonderful: what could be lovelier than a meaningful, *hand-drawn* gift? Beautiful, just beautiful.
ReplyDeletethanks dear. and a little film director in your midst, that is so exciting! he'll be happy to always have videos to look back on.
Deleteoh and your letter is in the mail! it should arrive within a week!
I love these photos!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I don't view Valentine's Day as a real holiday either.
However, we do exchange cards.
there's something way more thougthful about a simple card versus the typical gift like flowers or chocolate. my sentiments are "i don't want flowers just bc everyone else is getting flowers, i want flowers bc that week we want flowers." we ended up picking out some wildflower bouquet together.
Deletewe don't celebrate valentine's but that's so cute of your guys to have that tradition.
ReplyDeleteit's really become an inside joke now, this years was the long intestines ;)
DeleteLove these photos, and how much emotion is captured in them :) I like Valentine's Day, but not nearly as much as Thanksgiving & Christmas...you're right there's just something more special about being surrounded with the entire family. It's so cute that you still have that tradition on Valentine's Day though <3 :)
ReplyDeletei felt the same amount of emotions in the photos. and i do love holidays bc they are an excuse to get together with your family when life is flying by!
DeleteI totally love the organ thing. y'all are so cool. xo
ReplyDeletehaha thanks savannah! i'm growing quite the collection of upper body parts.
DeleteThat is such a cute tradition!
ReplyDeletethanks dear!
DeleteYou'll appreciate this. For years Neel has accidentally called Valentine's Day "Thanksgiving." I think it's quite appropriate! ;) But go and see what movies he suggested we watch and then you'll see how romantic we really are! ;)
ReplyDeletehaha that is too funny! but i could never make the mixup of vday and tday, they are way too different!
Deletei absolutely love these images! the little ones in your life are talented indeed. (and such a beautiful picture of you! i think it's one of my favorites.) xoxo
ReplyDeletethanks dear! you really are too sweet :) xo
Deletei adore them too! soft and hazy, and mostly accidental. xo
ReplyDeleteThat's so darling. So much more thoughtful than Hallmark! Though the perverse and dirty side of my brain is hoping that one year S draws an NC-17 organ for your card ;) But really, you kids are adorable, and I agree with Christine, that photo of you is something else. "Yelle in Repose." Those are certainly budding photographers! xo
ReplyDeletehaha no nc-17 organs yet. this year was a long intenstine, somewhat nc-17 in it's own way. and i like that! "yelle in repose" that's very good.
