Saturday started with come chicory coffee that my boss brought back from her most recent trip to New Orleans, knowing that I love Cafe du Monde coffee and just as I ran out of my own supply. I had every intention of sipping endless cups while catching up on my favorite blogs and the lives of my favorite bloggers. And then, my wifi went down. It's all fine now, nothing a new modem can't fix, and secretly it was a blessing in disguise. Instead of binge watching the Sopranos this weekend, I caught up on my favorite cooking magazines, issues dating back into summer. S spent some time in our little garden on the patio, and I cooked and cooked and cooked, my favorite way to make a mess.

Here is the aftermath of a trip to the market that I posted about, as well as Whole Foods. A quest for bread and cheese led me to be indecisive. I ended up with a delicious trio of American, French, and German cheese! Paired with a local baguette made with kalamata olives baked inside and crunchy crackers, heaven. The American cheese is a soft and tart goat cheese with herbs de provence including lavender, "Purple Haze", it's my favorite. The French is the creamiest brie with the best flavor called "D'Affinois", S's favorite on baguette slices. The last, the perfect companion to other cheeses because it is semi soft and nutty, called "Bruder Basil". Not sure why they call it that, but it reminds me of smokey and nutty goudas.

Like most do, I thought about resolutions or goals for 2014. There isn't anything that I need to do at the start of this year. We eat healthy, I cook all of the time, we go to yoga regularly, we travel, we save money for more travel, I'm reading three books at one time now that I've graduated, I dedicate all that I can to my career without sacrificing myself... The only thing that I have missed in 2013 that I think is important enough to me to make a goal of it, is having friends over for dinner. This is a college town, and like many college towns, people move away when they graduate and when they find jobs. This town is one big waiting room and I'm still here. It's okay though, this waiting room has the job that I've always wanted, a job that S has worked hard for, our favorite little gems of shops and restaurants, and this waiting room has our little home and each other. So I like this waiting room. The thing is, friends move away, and suddenly, there are less friends to invite over for dinner.

I would like to think that my goal of having more dinner parties and entertaining friends will be accomplished, but I know my nerves. I love entertaining friends, welcoming them, keeping them fed and warm in my home, but it is still nerve inducing. I'm equipped with so many delicious recipes and gorgeous cooking and serving ware and a huge dining room table that could seat 12 of my closest friends, and a new book of classic drink recipes with fresh herbs and interesting spices, and a bar cart and even a dress. But I just have to take the step to set a date, call some friends, and start a supper club.
This post really resonated with me for several reasons. We used to do dinner parties with people all the time, and I say a lot how much I miss them. Pre-kids felt easier, especially when we were all pre kids! And then when our son was little and we had friends with other little kids, it was easier too. When we lived in California, we had this awesome routine of dinner with one set on Mondays and another set on Fridays. I loved it. But moving here to VA, things changed. Kids got older, homework loomed, and it's just different. I'd love to have more dinner parties.
ReplyDeleteAnd like you, my little town is a waiting room too, but it's the Navy's fault! We have an incredibly transient community here, and making lasting friendships can be hard. Reaching out is the key, right? Good on you, and yes to cheese!
I too had a couple of friends who we used to rotate houses and dinner themes, and slowly they all moved away. So I'm in the same boat and I do hope that this is the year that I start again with new friends!
DeleteThat's a really good goal for this year. I tend to get a little flustered when we have company over, trying to make sure everything is perfect, but by the end of the night when we're all slouched on the sofa with wine and having a great conversation, I realize that all my anxiety about making sure all the bathroom surfaces were spotless didn't matter. I should work on that. Having people over is such a joy. And hey, any excuse to have more cheese and baguette is right up my alley! J put a wedge of drunken goat cheese (aged in wine, have you had it? Oh man!) in my Christmas stocking and we just started on it last night, paired it with some fig jam and truffle lavender honey. Delish!
ReplyDeleteAlso, your wifi situation reminded me of this: bit.ly/Kt2XoZ ;)
I too get extremely flustered when things are coming together right before guests walk into the door! But my favorite thing is having one close friend arrive a little early so that we can have a drink together before everyone else and that usually calms my nerves :) And yes - I have had the drunken goat cheese! That's my go-to when looking for a firmer cheese!
Deletefor starters i love cheese so i am just now half daydreaming over here about cheeses. i live in my hometown and everyone i know has moved a little bit outside of it (cheaper, portland is pretty expensive, hence i rent to stay) and all the dinners we had regularly stopped happening. so i echo what lauren says it gets harder, but i miss it too. so i think it's a great idea to start one this year! like you said you have everything to get it started! xo
ReplyDeletesome of my friends live a bit far away now too (mostly because my college was a 45 minute drive from my home and many students lived near campus). and i do think that they will come out toward me for a dinner party, but my reservations are that they won't want to stay late (and i'm all about late visitors on a friday on saturday!) and i find that a shame.. these are the things that hold me back!
DeleteA recent associate of mine just started a local book and cocktail club! I'd love to send you the deets if you're interested. :) A supper club sounds fantastic. I definitely want to host more dinners at my place, especially now that I'm learning to cook for my dietary preferences. Hope you are well dear!
ReplyDeletei love that! i would love to know more info! i have a little book club going with three friends - we read the same books at the same time and chat lightly. but! i think meetings and incorporating cocktails is even better! i must know more!
DeleteYou should really and truly start a supper club! I would drive to Orlando for that :) Your recipes always look so yummy--if I had the seating, I'd definitely invite more people over for dinner. Sadly, we have a tiny table with only 2 chairs (oh, galley kitchens....). I think it's really lovely that you feel so content in the other areas of your life. That is a rare and wonderful thing.
ReplyDeleteif you and your beau would really come along to orlando for a supper club i would totally have you both over for one!
Deleteokay, cheese and bread, seriously one of my weaknesses. yumm!
ReplyDeletei'm right there with you! it's heaven on a plate.
DeleteThose cheeses look DELIGHTFUL! I wish I could go to a supper club. We're still in our early 20s though and a lot of our friends don't have places they can host yet. But I'm always down for a wine and cheese night! Thanks for some inspiration!
ReplyDeletei'm with you. i happen to be one of my only friends that lives on their own (i mean no roommates) with a sizeable living room. so i am always willing to have people over! it's just i have to take the step to inviting people!
Deletethis looks so delish. all of your food posts look delish, really. :)
ReplyDeletethanks savannah! this is a particular favorite meal of mine. some cheese, bread, crackers, and wine. plus some nuts and jam and honey and charcuterie? that's a feast!
DeleteOh I love this post, Yelle! Your photos are always so inviting and amazing. I can tell that you guys do dining really well. I may just have to invite myself over for supper some time and make a special trip all the way from Sydney. Hehe.
ReplyDeletethank you miranti! and of course! if you were ever in the area all the way from sydney, well then i would have to make a dinner party to show you some local favorite dishes!
DeleteTwo things: I LOVE Cafe du Monde coffee (we get ours from this hole-in-the-wall random oriental market (we live in a college town too)) and I LOVE Whole Foods. A supper club sounds positively delightful.. I would totally join if I lived close-by! I hosted my first dinner party in November and absolutely loved it.. I wish we knew more people to cook for!
ReplyDeleteyes yes! there is a small place near me too that has it oooonce in a while and last time they were out! i feel the same way about wishing there were more people i could cook for in the area. i absolutely enjoy hosting people, but i also enjoying try new foods and unique meals, and not many people i know are as daring as i am!
Deleteomg, bread and cheese is the best. and dinner clubs as well!
ReplyDeleteagreed! i hope to get a dinner club going at least one month from now! i am determined :)
