I have organized the desk in our art studio/home office a bit in order for me to be able to get some work done in a quiet place. The rest of my apartment has so many distractions, especially in my dining room next to the kitchen. Although there is plenty of natural light in my home office, the dining room offers many things passing by the window to look at. Between that and the kitchen next to it just asking me to cook something, it's a complete distraction.

On my desk I have old post it notes with adorable illustrations, textbooks that need studying, a candle for calmness, and a vintage style magnifying glass for whimsy. My desk is up against the window that looks out to our courtyard of trees and grass. Mostly dogs and squirrels pass by, leaving me to whatever my be on my to do list at that moment.

On a more serious note, I've been struggling lately with how I feel about my blog, this blog. I created this blog when I thought I could use it personally and professionally. As much as I love blogging about the events that I'm working on, I cherish so much more documenting little moments in my life that I want to remember. This "events" blog has gone completely "lifestyle" and much more personal than I thought. I so enjoy blogging and the process of letting my blog unfold however I wish, so I don't want to force myself to continue blogging about events when I really love sharing my life and having others share theirs. Of course, little daily moments can be minuscule events, but I am so much more focused on my life right now. As my college career ends and my actual career begins, I feel that there is so much more going on that just my events.

What I mean by all of this, is that I don't love my blog name. Yelle Events. And I have to love it in order to feel like genuinely posting to it every week. I'm in the process of changing the name, the design, and the domain URL to something much more simpler, personal, and timeless. This will happen over the next two weeks. As much as I would love to just bite the bullet and switch everything over tonight - I don't want to do that to you, my readers, who I think enjoy reading what I've enjoyed posting.
This time around I'm not going to just brand something like I did "Yelle Events" because it's catchy and obvious. I already have something in mind and will slowly start to change my Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and then domain name.
None of you should have to do anything besides accept my lack of commitment! I can be with one man for 6 years and I can't even have a blog name (let alone a blog design) for more than a few months. This is all new to me so perhaps I am still zero-ing in on what I want this blog to become. Have any of you done this or felt this way? Trust me, I can commit to many things and it just seems that branding and style on my blog is just not one of them!
i completely understand. i'm sooo indecisive about my blog; i've changed the name 3.5 times (the last time from poppy "events" to poppy the blog) because i wanted it to feel like me. it's just got to click. i also struggled about whether or not to make it a more design-centered blog, but it becomes lifestyle without effort! i just can't ignore it :) i also changed my blog design a bunch and finally purchased something more custom. i finally feel more in sync with my blog, as if it's a better reflection of who i am and what i want readers to know.
ReplyDeletei'm sure you'll make the right choices in design/name. you've got great style, and you always stay true to yourself in your posts--your personality shines through! good luck with the transition :)

Oh gosh, I TOTALLY feel you on the blog front. Personally, I've been putting off having business cards made for ages upon ages, because I want to tweak something design wise a bit, get everything perfect before I print tie-in business cards... and then I'll want to change it all over again!
ReplyDeleteReally, I think the ability to make those changes, to resist being locked in, is really wonderful. We can be what we want, write what we want to write about, and change it up when we feel like it. No matter what the topic, the format, the aesthetic qualities of what we put out there, there is an audience for it.
And hey, personally I really like your writing tone, so you could write exclusively about shoe soles and I'd still read it. Okay, maybe not really. But Yelle, you just have to be yourself and do the Yelle thang.

I went through a major blog overhaul about a year ago, including a new name. Sometimes a blog just goes in a different direction and needs a makeover. I think the most important thing is to stay focused on things that interest you, and people will always come back to read about it. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteDon't feel bad about changing your blog name. I changed mine after several months from Build Castles in Air to Sincerely, Sara. And it's your blog, so you should feel comfortable with it and post whatever you want! If you love what you post, others will love it too!
ReplyDeleteP.S. -- I'm following you via Bloglovin!

I think you're doing the right thing, allowing your blog to develop together with you and not restricting yourself. I've had my blog name for more than five years now and only changed the design once, but the topics, the tone of voice... those have changed dramatically over the years.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I am in the process of moving my blog, change the name, the design etc. and with that comes a lot of thoughts on narrowing the number of topics I cover, deciding whether to let it be a daily journal or something else... It's not easy, but I feel that as long as I'm blogging for fun, I need to be able to adjust my blog whenever I feel like.
i did it! i changed my name and my look and the whole shebang. i started a blog thinking it would be one thing and then it ended up turing into nothing really because i didn't feel connected with it. after changing it to really be what felt representative of the whole of me, i started loving blogging. i was nervous to do it but now so glad i did!
ReplyDeleteand i agree with you, i started my blog to augment my business and truly i rarely do that (but it's nice to know i can - or customers can find out more about me from looking at it) but it's the more personal aspects of blogging that i connect with better in both my own and others' blogs. not to say i don't daily struggle with "should it be this or that or maybe this??" but i think there's no exact formula. a blog is what the writer creates it to be. i love seeing what you are up to and what you share so i will be here for the long haul no matter the name. however, if you feel you need a redo i say do it!! i really believe when you connect with what you are doing others see that and connect too. xo good luck!!
I hope you keep your blog. When I go to a blog that has a "theme" and I get hooked, I love the posts of their likings and life. Helps inspire me to experience more! Plus, when your career is more full-time than school, you'll have more events type posts to share! I also love rereading my blog for some nostalgia and think of it as an online scrapbook to share!
ReplyDeleteI feel apartments are so small and more distracting. I can't wait to have a home from scratch and keep it clean/minimalistic. :)

That might be what my desk is missing: a scented candle. I look forward to seeing/reading whatever you do next!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE IT!!!! did you do all that by yourself?! it looks amazing xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteHey, Yelle!
ReplyDeleteI think it is great that you have decided the direction in which you want to take your blog!
Also, I think it is really neat that we have so much in common.
I've started following your blog, and I look forward to see where it goes.
Also, hooray for getting married soon!
LOVE the new look Yelle!
