The Last of the Leaves

As we pack our bags here, we say goodbye to the last of the fall leaves in Chicago. The trees that were first to turn to orange here are now bare. Ahead of us, we seek out temples surrounded by trees that are on fire. Instead of following a trail of budding cherry blossoms, we are following Japan's wave of 'koyo' - their autumn leaves.

In the midst of the election news, this vacation that we've been planning for months is coming at the right time. I'm excited to experience Japanese culture, and I'm also excited to have a break from the intense emotions I have been feeling this last week. When I come back, I hope that Japan has charged my batteries with enough energy and passion to start making small differences in my community and in my country.
